Description

NovaStar MG201 — one decoder per screen, and the mosaic rebuilds itself

The MG201 is the 2K decoder of the AV-over-IP range. It receives the streams sent by MG encoders and renders them over Full HD HDMI. Several MG201 units synchronise to rebuild a mosaic across a video wall, and two USB ports provide KVM with cursor roaming from screen to screen.

Output: 1 x HDMI, up to 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz, 10-bit 4:4:4
Input: 1 x Gigabit Ethernet
KVM: 2 x USB 2.0 for keyboard and mouse, cross-platform roaming across Windows, Linux and macOS
Audio: 1 x stereo in, 1 x stereo out with adjustable volume
Codecs: HEVC and AVC — HDCP 1.4 and 1.3 compliant
Latency: 60 ms maximum
Mosaic: output distributed across several decoders, precise synchronisation

Technical Expertise

NovaStar MG201 — technical analysis

The multi-decoder mosaic is what makes this range interesting against a classic LCD wall: each screen gets its own decoder and the image rebuilds itself in sync with no centralised video wall processor. Cabling comes down to one network link per screen, which radically changes the topology of a security centre or crisis room. NovaStar does not publish the maximum matrix size: to validate per project.

The difference from the MG421 is format and KVM: the MG201 outputs Full HD with two USB 2.0 ports, the MG421 outputs 4K x 2K at 60 Hz with four USB 3.0 ports, and adds fibre, RS485/232, infrared, I/O and relay ports. On a 1080p supervision wall — the most common security-centre configuration — the MG201 does the job for a fraction of the price.

Use Cases

  • Security and crisis rooms — 1080p video wall with synchronised mosaic.
  • Trading floors — KVM with roaming from screen to screen.
  • Industrial supervision — one network link per screen, simplified cabling.
  • Campuses and commercial buildings — distribution over the existing network.
  • LCD walls without a central processor — the mosaic is built by the decoders.

Technical Tips

  • One decoder per screen — that is the principle: the mosaic rebuilds by synchronisation, not by a central processor.
  • Matrix size — not published by NovaStar: validate per project.
  • KVM — two USB 2.0 ports and cross-platform roaming; the MG421 has four in USB 3.0.
  • 60 ms latency — supervision and display, not live camera return.
  • Network — size the switch, VLAN and multicast before deployment.
