Description

NovaStar HDR Master 4K — turning an SDR source into native HDR10

The HDR Master 4K is the processor that converts an SDR source into HDR10 or HLG and scales up to 4K×2K at 60 Hz. It carries the SuperView III content-adaptive scaling engine and accepts four 12G-SDI inputs alongside HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort.

Specifications

Conversion: SDR to HDR10 and HLG, and HDR to SDR the other way
Input card: 1 x HDMI 2.0, 1 x DisplayPort 1.2, 4 x 12G-SDI (backward compatible 6G, 3G, HD-SDI and SD-SDI)
Interchangeable output cards: fibre version (1 x HDMI 2.0 + 4 x 10G optical) or SDI version (1 x HDMI 2.0 + 4 x 12G-SDI)
Capacity: up to 4K x 2K at 60 Hz, max width 8192 px, max height 7680 px, six simultaneous 4K inputs
Functions: image mosaic, contrast and grey gain adjustment, hot input backup, LCD monitoring screen, background and logo import
Format: 482.6 x 442.5 x 50.5 mm (1U 19-inch rack) — 7.5 kg
Power: AC 100–240 V, 3 A, 120 W max

Technical Expertise

NovaStar HDR Master 4K — technical analysis

The use case is precise and it is worth money: an existing SDR video source estate — cameras, playback servers, an installed control room — and an LED wall capable of HDR. Without this processor you display SDR on an HDR screen, and the investment in the panel does not show. With it, dynamic range, gamut and depth are rebuilt upstream of the screen, without touching the production chain.

Two integration points. The four 12G-SDI inputs make it a broadcast and studio device, not a meeting-room one: that is its target. And the interchangeable output cards — fibre or SDI — are chosen at order time according to site topology. NovaStar publishes the existence of the conversion algorithm but not its detail: we will not describe it more precisely than the manufacturer does.

Use Cases

  • Broadcast sets and studios — four 12G-SDI inputs and HDR conversion.
  • Premium rental and stage — making an HDR wall pay with existing SDR sources.
  • Video chain refurbishment — moving to HDR without changing sources.
  • Virtual production — dynamic range and gamut rebuilt upstream of the volume.
  • Long runs to the wall — 4 x 10G fibre output card.

Technical Tips

  • Output card chosen at order time — fibre or SDI: site topology decides, not price.
  • Four 12G-SDI inputs — this is broadcast and studio equipment, target and budget accordingly.
  • Reverse conversion — it also does HDR to SDR, useful to feed an SDR return.
  • Format — 1U rack but 7.5 kg and 443 mm deep: check the rack.
  • Thermal range — not published by NovaStar: consider it in a closed rack.
