NovaStar CVT4K-M — multimode fibre converter

The CVT4K-M is the high-end converter of the range: sixteen Neutrik Gigabit ports, four optical ports, cross-redundant optics and dual redundant power supplies. It is the device for installations where the link must not drop.

NovaStar CVT4K-M — technical analysis

The only trade-off that matters: multimode or single-mode. Multimode fibre (OM3/OM4, 50/125 µm, 850 nm) carries up to 300 m and costs markedly less in optics; single-mode fibre (OS1/OS2, 9/125 µm, 1310 nm) carries 10 km. Within a site — a room, a building, a control-room-to-stage run — multimode is enough and the optical budget is halved. As soon as you leave the building or cross a campus, single-mode is required. And if fibre is already installed, it decides: OM3 imposes multimode, OS2 imposes single-mode.

Two things set it apart. First the Neutrik connectors: lockable, built for repeated disassembly and accidental pull — this is touring hardware. Second the dual power supply: it is the only converter in the range with one. Worth noting: the CVT4K-M no longer appears on NovaStar's official accessories page while the CVT4K-S does, with no end-of-life announcement. We confirm availability before every commitment.
