Description
NovaStar BR203-N — power supply and receiving card on one PCB
The BR203-N belongs to NovaStar's BR series, a family of integrated control boards combining the AC/DC power supply and the receiving card on a single board. At the back of a cabinet it replaces the usual "power supply unit + receiving card" pair with one item: less internal cabling, fewer connectors, fewer failure points, and depth saved.
It is the entry point of the series and it owns that position: output voltage fixed at 4.2 V with no adjustment jumper, 13 A, HUB75 connectors instead of high-density JH ones, and a thermal range limited to +50 °C instead of +70 °C.
Key specifications
Load capacity: 384×256@60Hz. Jusqu'à 6 groupes RGB parallèle.
Module connectors: 3 × HUB75, jusqu'à 6 groupes RGB parallèle
AC input: 90–264 Vac, 47–63 Hz
DC output: 4,2 V fixe (non réglable) — 13 A, 65 W en crête, précision ≤ ±2 %
Dimensions: 180,0 × 104,0 × 26,8 mm (27,5 mm hors tout)
Weight: 247,6 g
Operating temperature: -20 °C à +50 °C
Image processing: pixel-level calibration, quick dark and bright line adjustment, 3D, Mapping 1.0, temperature and voltage monitoring, bit error detection, loop backup — no color management, no precise grayscale, no individual RGB gamma
Technical Expertise
NovaStar BR203-N — technical analysis
Buying a BR board is not the same reasoning as buying a receiving card. What decides is the available DC current, because it caps the luminance the cabinet can hold at full white. Its 13 A under 4.2 V gives 65 W peak. The lowest in the series, consistent with its 384 × 256 load capacity — also the most modest. This board is sized for a small cabinet, not a high-density wall.
What it lacks, and must be stated: no color management, no precise grayscale, no individual RGB gamma, no HDR, and Mapping at version 1.0 instead of 1.1. On an information display, a price panel or simple signage, none of these absences shows. On a wall meant to display refined video or to be filmed, they all do. The fixed 4.2 V output is the second point to check: if your modules need 3.8 V, this board does not suit.
Three design points: the module connector format must match your panels exactly (3 × HUB75, jusqu'à 6 groupes RGB parallèle); thermal derating means sizing cabinet ventilation accordingly; and since the board is both power supply and receiver, one failure takes out both — on a critical installation, plan spare stock accordingly.
Use Cases
- Small cabinets and HUB75 modules — standard connectors, simple implementation.
- Information display and signage — where image processing is not a criterion.
- Price panels and ribbons — 384 × 256 is ample.
- Tight-budget projects — the entry point of the BR series.
- 4.2 V modules — fixed output voltage, to validate before ordering.
Technical Tips
- Available current — 13 A for 65 W peak: sized for a small cabinet, not a high-density wall.
- Connectors — 3 × HUB75, jusqu'à 6 groupes RGB parallèle: check the exact match with your modules before ordering.
- Thermal — -20 °C to +50 °C only, against +70 °C for the rest of the series: rule it out for hot locations.
- Output fixed at 4.2 V — no adjustment jumper: check your modules accept that voltage before ordering.
- Single point of failure — power and reception on the same board: one failure takes out both, plan spare stock.
